CLEVELAND – Bartlett Maritime Corporation announces former U.S. Senators Byron Dorgan and Jim Talent have joined the company’s Board of Directors Feb. 28, 2024.

Dorgan served as Senator from North Dakota from 1992 to 2011 after 12 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Talent served as Senator from Missouri from 2002 to 2007 after eight years as a member of the House.

“We are honored to have such incredible national leaders as Senators Dorgan and Talent join our team,” said Edward L. Bartlett, Jr., Bartlett Maritime Corporation’s founder and chief executive officer. “They have dedicated their professional lives in public service to our country, and their expertise and insight will be invaluable in our efforts to help rebuild America’s submarine industrial base at this critical moment in history.”

Current industrial base shortfalls have contributed to a backlog in submarine maintenance, leaving nearly twice as many submarines as expected unavailable for operations. Delays in construction of new submarines and increased obligations in support of AUKUS have compounded the challenges facing the submarine force.

“America has an urgent responsibility to resurrect our maritime industrial capacity, and specifically our ability to build and maintain our submarine force,” said Dorgan. “Bartlett Maritime offers a unique approach that will put more of our country’s unmatched skilled labor force back on the field. I look forward to helping the Bartlett team move their plan forward.”

BMC proposes to expand the submarine industrial base by constructing and operating component repair facilities in northeast Ohio and establishing a rotational workforce of skilled trades workers to support submarine construction and maintenance. The proposal also includes an option to build a new public naval shipyard in Charleston, S.C.

“The world relies on the security and stability of our oceans, and the U.S. Navy has been the guarantor of that global order for 80 years,” Talent said. “Our Sailors depend on us to give them what they need to win. I am confident Bartlett Maritime can deliver solutions that will help our Navy maintain its advantage and put more of our most capable submarines back to sea.”
